Art Installations

Our Theme is Ritual

For our tenth edition, Body&Soul are looking for creative interpretations of the theme of RITUAL. We invite applicants to create interactive rites; ritual processions; elaborate installations; shrines; icons; temples; visions. Our theme will occupy the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime. The human urge to make events, objects, actions, and personalities sacred is protean. This year’s theme is an attempt to reinvent ritual in our post post-modern world. For this purpose, we will disregard assertions of belief and concentrate instead on the immediate experience of play.

“Sacred is not a special place, or a ritual, or a particular group of people.  It’s more normal than that. … the ritual isn’t sacred, it just opens the door to the experience. … sacred is available in our day-to-day lives“.

(Margaret J. Wheatley)

Artworks may include: Light Installations; Large Scale Works; Space Creation; Interactive Projects; Landscape Art; Sound Installations; Video Works; Projections; Sculptures; Kinetic Structures; and any other creative concept you would like to propose.

We are curious to hear how ritual has featured in your life. Your response may include an artwork that connects to, or is inspired by, ritual / reverence / the sacred / gateways / thresholds / rites / nature / play / mythology / folklore / mysticism / ceremony / community / icons / shrines. Your response may also come from a very personal place, and we would love to hear that too. We love detail – don’t hold back.

While we promote full artistic expression without boundaries, please be realistic in terms of the cost and safety of your project. We will make our final decisions based upon your level of expertise, vision and ability to work within deadlines and small budgets. Similarly, please take into consideration that your work will be viewed by thousands in the light of day and the dark of night.

Applications will be considered for Body&Soul Festival, taking place on 21st – 23rd June 2019 in Ballinlough Castle, as well as Solas at Latitude Festival, July 18 –  July 21 2019 and Body&Soul at Electric Picnic, August 30 – September 1 2019.

Take your time filling out the application form and read through the whole form before beginning.

DEADLINE:  Friday 18th January 2019 23:59

Terms & Conditions

Taking Responsibility.
Your art will be viewed by thousands of people who may want to touch it, climb on it, sit under it or dance within it – therefore there are a number of factors to consider when installing art or building venues of various shapes and sizes within a live arena. Please realise this and take careful consideration with each question when filling out the application. All aspects of your proposal will be taken into account. If there is anything that you are unsure about, please note in the application that this is something you wish to discuss further – we are only too happy to help.

Funding.
Each year the festival fully funds certain Creative Projects, be they Venues, Art Installations or Performances. Outside of these bursaries it is only in certain circumstances that we can cover more than materials and transportation expenses. Any funding you raise and contribute may also help realise your works full potential. Any agreed funds provided by Body&Soul must be invoiced post event and details of information required will be provided prior to this. Please also be aware that you will need to provide food for yourself and your crew on site as Body&Soul does not cover this.

Health & Safety.
Once a proposal is under consideration, we will send out a detailed health & safety document that must be fully completed by you and signed off on by our site manager in order for it to be accepted.

Transportation.
Due to site vehicle movement restrictions on site, we will need to know exactly how you plan to deliver and remove your piece along with the type of vehicle you intend to use to do this.

Weather.
Another factor to seriously consider is the weather. It must be able to withstand what could be wet and windy conditions.

Communication.
We will do our best to respond to you within 2-3 weeks from when you submit your proposal. Due to the high volume of proposals we receive it sometimes takes us this long to reply. We hope you understand our position on this.

De-rig & Clean Up.

Leave No Trace – We must return the festival site exactly how it was given to us. Therefore it is your full responsibility to give back your allocated space in the same condition you found it in. Everything must be removed, without exception! We will have a team on the ground who are dedicated to seeing that this is executed. Failure to comply with the above will result in your funding being withheld.

Thank You,

The Body&Soul team x
