Body&Soul Design Bursary

Body&Soul Bursary Grants are designed to fulfil the artistic and decorative requirements for the festival in 2019 and beyond, while providing artists an opportunity to fulfil a proposed project and present new work to a large audience in an outdoor environment. Bursaries are geared towards professional artists, technicians, production managers and creatives working in a relevant sector, with experience in delivering similar projects on budget and on time. We encourage submissions that develop a high-quality, imaginative artistic practice; and can reach and engage with diverse audiences.

Please read the brief for all bursaries (below) before applying, and read through the whole application form before completing. You must be registered with the our website to make an application.

If you have questions regarding any bursary, please contact us; further details as well as relevant 2d and 3d Stage plans are available on request from decor@bodyandsoul.ie.

While we promote full artistic expression without boundaries, please be realistic in terms of the cost and safety of your project. We will make our final decisions based upon your level of expertise, vision and ability to work within deadlines and small budgets.
Please read our Terms and Conditions here.

Theme of RITUAL
For our tenth edition, Body&Soul are looking for creative interpretations of the theme of RITUAL. Our theme will occupy the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime. Gateways can be symbolic of many things in our lives, representing beginnings and endings; gains and losses; transitions, rites of passage, the portal between the conscious and the sacred. Faith, ritual, myth, folklore are anthropological insights – glimpses into the psyche – and offer a way to free the imagination. To respond to them prompts letting go of the tangible, and an acceptance that possible solutions and ways for the future might be found beyond the subconscious.

We invite applicants to reflect on the theme of RITUAL and be inspired, or not, by, the sacred / shrines / temples / icons / reverence / rites / nature / play / mythology / folklore / mysticism / ceremony / community.

Structural Centrepiece - Click for Brief

Requirements:
We are requesting submissions for the design, fabrication and execution of a large scale structure for Body&Soul 2019. Successful candidates will be individuals or groups with a proven record of outstanding visual art design and installation and relevant experience of working within a tight budget and build timeframe with a professional team.

The piece may have interactive elements, but we encourage proposals that create a visual focal point and hang out space within a larger area. Safety is the most important aspect of the festival so the structure must be structurally sound and use materials that will withstand the harsh conditions of our outdoor environment (eg. high winds, rain).
To be considered, the piece must be straightforward to construct and capable of packing down easily for storage and transportation. All elements must pack down to fit on a pallet and be transportable on a curtainsider. Each pallet to be no more than approx., 5m length x 1m depth (can stack up to 1m high).

Theme of RITUAL
This structure will serve as a gathering point, a place of ceremony, a temple, or a space where participants can interact, relax and meditate within. A ritual circle has been used since ancient times to hold a sacred space for ceremonies that mark key points in our journey through life. Ritual and ceremony allow us to look back at past beliefs and experiences as a way to understand current society and its possible futures. This year’s theme is an attempt to reinvent ritual in our post post-modern world. For this purpose, we will disregard assertions of belief and concentrate instead on the immediate experience of play.
“Sacred is not a special place, or a ritual, or a particular group of people. It’s more normal than that. … the ritual isn’t sacred, it just opens the door to the experience. … sacred is available in our day-to-day lives”, (Margaret J. Wheatley).

We invite applicants to reflect on the theme of RITUAL and be inspired, or not, by, the sacred / shrines / temples / icons / reverence / rites / nature / play / mythology / folklore / mysticism / ceremony / community.

Terms & Conditions

Taking Responsibility.
Your art will be viewed by thousands of people who may want to touch it, climb on it, sit under it or dance within it – therefore there are a number of factors to consider when installing art or building venues of various shapes and sizes within a live arena. Please realise this and take careful consideration with each question when filling out the application. All aspects of your proposal will be taken into account. If there is anything that you are unsure about, please note in the application that this is something you wish to discuss further – we are only too happy to help.

Funding.
Each year the festival fully funds certain Creative Projects, be they Venues, Art Installations or Performances. Outside of these bursaries it is only in certain circumstances that we can cover more than materials and transportation expenses. Any funding you raise and contribute may also help realise your works full potential. Any agreed funds provided by Body&Soul must be invoiced post event and details of information required will be provided prior to this. Please also be aware that you will need to provide food for yourself and your crew on site as Body&Soul does not cover this.

Health & Safety.
Once a proposal is under consideration, we will send out a detailed health & safety document that must be fully completed by you and signed off on by our site manager in order for it to be accepted.

Transportation.
Due to site vehicle movement restrictions on site, we will need to know exactly how you plan to deliver and remove your piece along with the type of vehicle you intend to use to do this.

Weather.
Another factor to seriously consider is the weather. It must be able to withstand what could be wet and windy conditions.

Communication.
We will do our best to respond to you within 2-3 weeks from when you submit your proposal. Due to the high volume of proposals we receive it sometimes takes us this long to reply. We hope you understand our position on this.

De-rig & Clean Up.

Leave No Trace – We must return the festival site exactly how it was given to us. Therefore it is your full responsibility to give back your allocated space in the same condition you found it in. Everything must be removed, without exception! We will have a team on the ground who are dedicated to seeing that this is executed. Failure to comply with the above will result in your funding being withheld.

Thank You,

The Body&Soul team x
