Small Venues and Immersive Environments

Our Theme Is Ritual

For our tenth edition, Body&Soul are looking for creative interpretations of the theme of RITUAL. We invite applicants to create interactive rites; ritual processions; elaborate installations; shrines; icons; temples; visions. Our theme will occupy the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime. The human urge to make events, objects, actions, and personalities sacred is protean. This year’s theme is an attempt to reinvent ritual in our post post-modern world. For this purpose, we will disregard assertions of belief and concentrate instead on the immediate experience of play.

“Sacred is not a special place, or a ritual, or a particular group of people.  It’s more normal than that. … the ritual isn’t sacred, it just opens the door to the experience. … sacred is available in our day-to-day lives“.

(Margaret J. Wheatley)

We are curious to hear how ritual has featured in your life. Your response may include an idea  that connects to, or is inspired by, ritual / reverence / the sacred / gateways / thresholds / rites / nature / play / mythology / folklore / mysticism / ceremony / community. Your response may also come from a very personal place, and we would love to hear that too. We love detail – don’t hold back.

While we promote full artistic expression without boundaries, please be realistic in terms of the cost and safety of your project. We will make our final decisions based upon your level of expertise, vision and ability to work within deadlines and budgets. Similarly, please take into consideration that your work will be viewed by thousands in the light of day and the dark of night.

Applications will be considered for Body&Soul Festival, taking place on 21st – 23rd June 2019 in Ballinlough Castle and Body&Soul at Electric Picnic, August 30 – September 1 2019.

DEADLINE:  Friday 25th January 2019 23:59

Before filling in the application form please read all of the information below. While we promote full artistic expression without boundaries, a certain amount of realism and professionalism must be incorporated into your proposal – while insuring the safety of all festival goers. Therefore, so as to be in a position to accept your application we need you to consider the following terms & conditions.

The maximum bursary available is €10k. This budget is to include your full budget and event requirements & site build costs. If successful, the event requirements and build costs will be determined by our site department.

Terms and Conditions

Taking Responsibility. Your space will be viewed by thousands of people who may want to touch it, climb on it, sit under it or dance within it – therefore there are a number of factors to consider when building venues of various shapes and sizes within a live arena. Please take careful consideration with each question when filling out the application. All aspects of your proposal will be taken into account. If there is anything that you are unsure about, please note in the application that this is something you wish to discuss further – we are only too happy to help.

Funding. Each year the festival funds new Venues. You will need to provide a detailed Budget later in this application. If your application is successful, the cost of build ( event requirements ) will to be evaluated by our site team and deducted from the total bursary awarded.

Health & Safety. Once a proposal is under consideration, we will send out a detailed health & safety document that must be fully completed by you and signed off on by our site manager in order for it to be accepted.

New Venue Idea. If you are proposing a New Venue idea, and are hoping to provide and/or sell food & beverages or products, please be aware that you will need to fill out further forms (which we will provide once under consideration) in order to comply with Health & Safety/EHO/Inland Revenue regulations.

Transportation. Due to site vehicle movement restrictions on site, we will need to know exactly how you plan to deliver and remove your piece along with the type of vehicle you intend to use to do this.

Weather. Another factor to seriously consider is the weather. It must be able to withstand what could be wet and windy conditions.

Communication. We will do our best to respond to you within 2-3 weeks from when you submit your proposal. Due to the high volume of proposals we receive it sometimes takes us this long to reply. We hope you understand our position on this.

De-rig & Clean Up. Leave-No-Trace – We must return the festival site exactly how it was given to us. Therefore it is your full responsibility to give back your allocated space in the same condition you found it in. Everything must be removed, without exception! We will have a team on the ground who are dedicated to seeing that this is executed. Failure to comply with the above will result in your funding being withheld.

Thank You
