Theatre and Performance Art

Our Theme Is Ritual

From the invitation to come with an open mind, to the occasion of the masquerade ball, the gathering of thousands to watch an act perform, to a meditation on the summer solstice morning, from the communal breaking of bread to the making of a cup of tea – These rites speak of soulful need; the desire to belong to a place, to belong to a time, to belong to one another, and to belong to something that is greater than ourselves, even in the midst of impermanence.
We invite participants to create interactive rites, ritual processions, elaborate dance,  performance and visions. Our theme will occupy the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime. The human urge to make events, objects, actions, and personalities sacred is protean. It can fix on and inhabit anyone or anything. This year our theme will release this spirit across the woodlands and wallled gardens of Ballinlough Castle.
“Sacred is not a special place, or a ritual, or a particular group of people.  It’s more normal than that. … the ritual isn’t sacred, it just opens the door to the experience. … sacred is available in our day-to-day lives“.

(Margaret J. Wheatley)

We are curious to hear how ritual has featured in your life. Your response may include a performance that connects to, or is inspired by, ritual / reverence / the sacred / gateways / thresholds / rites / nature / play / mythology / folklore / mysticism / ceremony / community. Your response may also come from a very personal place, and we would love to hear that too. We love detail – don’t hold back.

While we promote full artistic expression without boundaries, please be realistic in terms of the cost and safety of your project. We will make our final decisions based upon your level of expertise, vision and ability to work within deadlines and small budgets. Similarly, please take into consideration that your work will be viewed by thousands in the light of day and the dark of night.

Applications will be considered for Body&Soul Festival, taking place on 21st – 23rd June 2019 in Ballinlough Castle.

DEADLINE:  Friday 25th January 2019 23:59

Terms and Conditions
Before filling in the application please read all of the information below. While we promote full artistic expression without boundaries, a certain amount of realism and professionalism must be incorporated into proposals – which includes insuring the safety of all festival goers (you and the general public). Therefore, to be in a position to be able to accept your application we need you to consider the following terms & conditions:
Taking Responsibility. Your space will be viewed by thousands of people who may want to touch it, climb on it, sit under it or dance within it – therefore there are a number of factors to consider when building venues of various shapes and sizes within a live arena. Please take careful consideration with each question when filling out the application. All aspects of your proposal will be taken into account. If there is anything that you are unsure about, please note in the application that this is something you wish to discuss further – we are only too happy to help.
Funding. Each year the festival funds certain Performances, be they Theatrical, Aerial, Walkabout or Choreographed Eccentricities. Outside of these bursaries it is only in certain circumstances that we can cover more than materials and transportation expenses.
Health & Safety. Once a proposal is under consideration, we will send out a detailed health & safety document that must be fully completed by you and signed off on by our site manager in order for it to be accepted. Certain performances may require Public Liability Insurance. Documentation will need to be submitted on acceptance. Due to site vehicle movement restrictions on site, we will need to know exactly how you plan to deliver any materials along with the type of vehicle you intend to use to do this. Please note: we have very limited parking, storage and dressing space. Another factor to seriously consider is the weather. Any performance/performers should be able to withstand what could be wet and windy conditions
Communication. We will do our best to respond to you within 2-3 weeks from when you submitted your application. Due to the high volume of proposals we receive it sometimes takes us this long to reply. We will have contacted all successful candidates by March 1st. We hope you understand our position on this.
De-rig & Clean Up. We operate a leave-no-trace policy. We must return the festival site exactly how it was given to us. Therefore it is your full responsibility to give back your allocated space in the same condition you found it in. Everything must be removed, without exception! We will have a team on the ground who are dedicated to seeing that this is executed. Failure to comply with the above will result in your funding being withheld.
Thank You
